Adding and Deleting Pages

As your site grows and changes over time, you may have the need to add or remove pages from it. It is also important from a search engine optimization standpoint to keep your content fresh and changing. While editing content on an existing page is good, adding new pages is better.

The information below refers to adding an deleting normal web pages. To work with blog posts, see Adding and Editing Blog Posts.

Adding a New Page

To add a new page to your website, you must first decide where you want it to fall within the navigation. For example, if you want it to appear under the "About Us" menu, you need to add the page to the About Us section. The section where you want the new page to fall is called its "parent."

There may be times when you want to add a page that does not appear within the navigation. For example, you may be creating a stand-alone landing page. In that case, you'll need to add the page to non-menu-related section. Depending on how your site is setup, you may have a section called "Hidden." If so, adding a new page to this section hides it from the navigation (but doesn't hide it from website visitors). If not, you can add the new page on the same level as your site's Home page. In other words, make "Home" the new page's parent.

To add a new page:

  1. Once you've logged in click on 'Navigation' from the left hand panel
  2. On the right hand side you'll see all the pages on your website organized in a sitemap. Find the area you'd like to add the new page to.
  3. Click the "Add" (plus-sign) icon for new page's parent.

  4. In the "Add to Navigation" dialog box that appears, select "Content (Page)."new webpage dialog box
  5. Enter a "Page Title" for the new page. This will become the heading that appears on the page as well as the name that appears on the Virteom Navigation window. It cannot be changed later.
  6. As you enter a page name, Virteom will create the "Page URL." You may override this, but the URL cannot include spaces and should be in lower case. For search engine optimization purposes, we recommend you include keywords in the URL where possible and separate all keywords with dashes. The URL cannot be changed after the page has been created.
  7. Select a "Page Layout." The options in this dropdown will vary based on how your site is designed. They include each of the design templates that are used on your site. You can change this setting later.
  8. If you would like to immediately add content to the page after creating it, check the "I would like to edit this page after I hit save" checkbox.
  9. Click the "Save" button.
  10. If you checked the "would like to edit this page after I hit save" checkbox, the new page will appear in Editor mode, ready for you to add content. If not, the Page Title new page will be shown in the Navigation window. If desired, you can change its location in the navigation.

Deleting a Page

After pages have been published, it is generally not a good idea to delete them without creating a redirect. This is because visitors may have bookmarked them and other sites may have linked to them, which can lead to broken links and frustrating experience. In addition, search engines like content and dislike broken links.

However, there may be times when deleting a page is necessary. In that case, it's very simple.

To delete a page:

  1. Access the Navigation window by clicking the Navigation link in the Menu Bar.
  2. Click the "Delete" (x icon) for the page you wish to delete.
